Indigo Basics w/ Rachel Miller
Learn to work with one of our most unique and historic natural dyes!
Service Description
This class will provide a thorough, beginner-friendly indigo dyeing experience for those who want to get to know the one true-blue natural dye—a color and process unlike any other! Participants will learn how to build an indigo vat using all-natural ingredients and how to take care of that vat by feeding it and monitoring its pH. We will then explore a variety of shaping and resist techniques on our cloth goods before dyeing them, creating striking blue-and-white patterns. Participants will be provided with several pieces of fabric to dye and take home, along with a detailed handout and the experiential knowledge to continue their indigo journey on their own. Two additional items may be brought from home to be dyed (if time allows), but they MUST be well-washed in hot water two or more times prior to class, using unscented laundry soap. Please bring an apron or wear clothes that can get stained AND bring long rubber gloves (the kind you clean and do dishes with, not single-use plastic gloves) if you don't want blue hands and forearms! 😀 Snacks + drinks provided This is a class for adults at the Wild Arts Learning Center located in Springfield, MO. For locals, we are just out East sunshine around the bend from Turners Station off J. The address and directions are emailed upon booking.
