KIDS - 6 Week ASL Basics Class (age 10+)
Learn the beginning basics of American Sign Language with MSU student, Ulali Bently
Service Description
In this six-week class, students will learn the basics of American Sign Language including sentence structure, the alphabet, numbers and other basic vocabulary. By the end of the session, they will have simple conversation skills like introducing themselves and asking their peers a question. Students will also learn about Deaf culture. When learning any language, it is important to understand the culture from where it comes. This will include things like the difference between "Deaf" and "deaf." General Outline (Subject to Change) Week 1: Focus on being deaf, how ASL works and how it is different from English. If time allows, we will start the alphabet. Week 2: Work on sentence structure. This is a very easy concept, it’s called time, topic and comment. We will work with how sentences in English are built differently than in ASL. Week 3: Cover the question words and how to ask questions, as well as yes and no signs. In this class, we will go over the alphabet more in-depth. Week 4: Work with numbers. This will also include how to say how old you are and how to talk about time like second, minute, and hour. If time allow, we will cover day, month, week, and year. Week 5: Cover how to introduce yourself with phrases such as “My name is-” and how to ask someone what their name is. We will also learn some common vocabulary like people, animals, and food. Week 6: Focus on reviewing everything we have learned thus far. The kids will partner up and practice asking and answering questions At the beginning of each class, we will do a short review of what we learned the previous week, so students are able to integrate weekly.
