Service Description

Join Deborah Garner in a collaged, raw-edge appliqué and free-motion quilting class. Don’t be intimidated by the process! It’s like doodling with thread and fabric. We will make the leaves and bird out of scraps to learn free-motion stitching. Then we will create a nest of real twigs and fabric to place on your unique background. You will need a sewing machine with the ability to drop the feed dogs and a darning or free-motion foot. Don’t forget to insert a new, sharp needle (and bring along a spare needle). Regular cotton thread will be used. It is strongly suggested that you have a pair of micro serrated scissors for cutting. The micro serrated blades give a sharp edge that prevents fraying fabric. Feel free to bring along your own fabric scraps if you want specific colors. (largest pieces needed are smaller than your hand.) No fear, though, if you don't have any. We have lots of fabric to share! While planning the layout of your collage, a variety of methods of securing pieces of the collage to the background will be demonstrated. Deborah will guide you through practicing techniques on scraps of fabric before working directly on the collage. Finally, a variety of finishing techniques will be demonstrated. Examples of upcoming collage class projects will be on display. *Note: The sewing could be done by hand stitching, but it will take much longer than the allotted class time and will give a different look. If hand stitching is your style, feel free to adapt. Snacks + Drinks provided. This is a class for adults at the Wild Arts learning center located in Springfield, MO. For locals, we are just out East sunshine around the bend from Turners Station off J. The address and directions are emailed upon booking.
